How To Properly Winterize Your Mower

Your lawn mower has been your reliable companion throughout the mowing season, so it's important to give it the proper care as you prepare it for winter storage. By following these detailed steps, you can ensure your mower will start smoothly and be ready for action come spring. Keep your operator's manual nearby for reference as you work on your mower.

Remove the Battery (if equipped)

• Disconnect Carefully: Start by disconnecting the negative cable (marked with a minus sign) first, followed by the positive cable.
• Clean and Store: Remove the battery and clean it with a cloth. Use a metal brush or a battery cleaner, such as Briggs & Stratton Battery Terminal Cleaner, to clean the terminals. For extra protection, coat the terminals with a product like Briggs & Stratton Terminal Protector.
  
• Proper Storage: Store the battery in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources like gas cans, water heaters, or furnaces.

Add Stabilized Fuel

• Use Fuel Stabilizer: Add fuel stabilizer to your fuel can as per the package instructions. This will prevent the fuel from degrading, which can begin to occur in as little as 30 days, and causing clogs in the fuel system.
• Full Tank: Store your mower with a full tank of treated fuel. This helps prevent moisture from condensing inside the tank, which can lead to rust and clog the carburetor.
• Run the Engine: After filling the tank with stabilized fuel, run the mower for a few minutes to ensure the treated fuel circulates through the entire fuel system.

Change the Oil

• Drain Old Oil: Warm up the engine slightly to thin the oil, making it easier to drain. Then, drain the old oil into a suitable container.
• Replace with Fresh Oil: Refill with fresh oil that meets your mower's specifications. Consult your operator’s manual for the correct type and amount of oil.

Sharpen and Inspect the Blades
