What type and how much oil for my lawn mower?

Quick Links:

Before you are able to change the lawn mower oil on your Briggs & Stratton® small engine, it is important to know the correct type and capacity required for your specific equipment and local climate.

What type of oil is best for lawn mowers?

The best oil for your lawn mower depends on your outside temperatures, but SAE 30 is the most common oil for small engines in warmer climates. Always choose a high-quality detergent oil classified as "For Service SF, SG, SH, SJ" or higher, and avoid special additives.

  • SAE 30: Best for warmer temperatures (above 40°F).
  • SAE 10W-30: Good for varying temperatures, but may increase oil consumption above 80°F.
  • Synthetic SAE 5W-30: Provides the best protection at all temperatures, improved cold-weather starting, and less oil consumption.
  • Vanguard 15W-50: Ideal for continuous commercial use and varying temperatures.

Lawnmower Oil Recommendation Chart

*Below 40°F (4°C) the use of SAE 30 will result in hard starting.

**Above 80°F (27°C) the use of 10W30 may cause increased oil consumption. Check oil level more frequently.

Can I use synthetic oil in my lawn mower?

Yes, you can use synthetic 5W30 or 15W50 oil in all temperature ranges for your lawn mower. We recommend Briggs & Stratton Synthetic Oil, which improves cold-weather starting and guarantees compliance with your warranty requirements. How do I check the oil level in my lawn mower?

How to Check Your Lawnmower Oil

To check your oil level, park the mower on a level surface, remove the dipstick, and wipe it clean with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick fully (making sure the cap teeth match the tube grooves), remove it again, and look at the bottom of the blade. The oil should sit between the "full" and "add" marks. If it is low, pour in a few ounces at a time to avoid overfilling.
