For over 100 years, Briggs & Stratton has manufactured reliable small engines to be used in lawn mowers and other products, including generators, pressure washers, snow blowers, and leaf blowers. Each year, approximately 100 million of our engines are built in the United States and mounted on 8 out of the top 10 leading lawn mower brands. If you have own a lawn mower or other chore product, chances are its powered by a Briggs & Stratton.

Briggs & Stratton engines have evolved in many ways since the Type P (for “Portable”) rolled off the Milwaukee assembly line in October 1920, introducing practical small engines for residential and commercial use. Since then, we’ve built our engines to become quieter, lighter, cleaner, and more powerful to match the expanding needs of our customers.

Engine Resources

To ensure our customers get the most out our engines, we have compiled a list of resources on this website. Dig deeper on our site to find information on lawn and small engine parts, repair information, and manuals; or find the engine for your push mower or riding lawn mower.

This could be caused by a couple things; carbon build-up on the head, valves not seating properly, intake manifold air leak, blockage in the carburetor, etc. Please take the unit to an authorized Briggs & Stratton service dealer for diagnosis. You can locate one here:

Engine stops after primed gas is burned.

Will continue to run if bulb is continually pushed. 158 cc Briggs & Stratton mounted on a mulching push mower. About 1 1/2 years old

This is usually caused by a clog in the carburetor. You will want to clean the carburetor and here is a link that will help you do this:

what kind of gas do I put in my push lawn mower

It is an Ariens lawn mower with Briggs & Stratton Engine and we have had it for about 3 years. I don't usually fill it, but my husband isn't here and my lawn is half done. Would it hurt if I put in the wrong mix?

You will want to use a minimum of 87 octane fuel. Here is a link to additional fuel recommendations:

Briggs & Stratton 6.5 hp.engine over speeds.

My engine runs fine for awhile, then it overspeeds to full trottle. I have to shut it down , then restart it and it runs fine for a little while then o verspeeds again. I sent this problem before, but never received a answer.Thank You For any help you can give me. Paul (Mack2)

This could be an issue with a linkage. Check the linkages, also check the air filter. If the filter is clogged, as the engine heats up you will get vapor lock and this can cause the engine to either overspeed or shut down.
