How to Replace a Paper Air Filter

Your Paper Air Filter should be replaced every 3 months or after 25 hours of use.

How To Change A Paper Filter Cartridge:

  1. Loosen cover screw.
  2. Tilt cover down.
  3. Carefully remove and discard paper cartridge.
  4. Install new cartridge with paper pleat out.
  5. Close cover.
  6. Tighten screw securely.

How It Works:

A paper air filter element works by causing any air that is intended to enter the combustion chamber of the engine to pass through a filtering device made with microscopic holes in it. The paper element traps the dirt particles on the outside of the element.

I changed air filter but im not sure if i placed it in the cover right. Should the pleats face the opening of the carburetor?

I have the John Deere JS26 and for some reason it has white smoke coming out and oil is leaking through the air filter. Please help.

This is likely caused by oil coming from the breather. It sounds like you have a loss of crankcase vacuum. First, check for any obstructions in the entire breather assembly (tube, breather, etc.) make sure the hose is not kinked or obstructed in any way. If no obstructions, replace the breather. Next, check and replace all the seals around the dipstick assembly (if equipped), including the dipstick O-ring itself (regardless of what condition it looks like). I would also check any other seals or gaskets that may be deteriorated, loose or missing. Any small air leak can cause an excess of air entering the crankcase and will create a higher oil mist than the breather is capable of handling. The excess oil will then return through the breather tube and back to the air filter.

Can we order a paper filter on line?   How can we check for prices?

First you will need to get the part number. To locate any information on your engine, you will first need the model type and code. Please see the following FAQ for assistance in locating these numbers: Once you have this information you can find information on your engine here: Select engine as your product type and follow the directions for entering the model type and trim into the search fields.
