Fuel is Mixing with Oil in Crankcase

How did fuel get in my engine oil and how do I fix this?

If your engine has a fuel shut-off valve, ensure that this valve is closed when the engine is not in use. This condition may also be the result of the fuel float in the carburetor being stuck in the open position due to gumming (caused by stale fuel) or debris.

For assistance with your troubleshooting, please download our Carburetion Troubleshooting Quick Reference Guide (PDF).

If you wish to perform this maintenance yourself, a good source for engine specifications and technical servicing information would be a Briggs & Stratton Repair Manual (Lookup Repair Manual by Model Series PDF). The correct Repair Manual for your model engine is often listed in your engine's Illustrated Parts List.

Repair Manuals are available for purchase through our website's Learning Resources section or locally from a Briggs & Stratton Authorized Dealer.
