My engine number is 287707-0227-01
I need to get a new starter.
I do not know if the starter ring gear is steel or aluminum yet.
My starter housing (part # 803) is about 3-3/4 inches long or 4 inches long including both end caps (see attached photos). The manual says that the housing length is either 3-5/8 or 4-3/8. Mine seems to be neither.
How else can I measure my starter housing to be sure I am ordering a correct replacement? Even the tech at the small engine shop was confused by my starter's housing's length compared to the listed measurements in the manual.
What are the differences in the starters made for metal or aluminum ring gears? I would think it should be ok to put a starter meant for aluminum ring gear on a steel ring geared motor, but the manual doesn't seem to indicate that. I don't want to purchase an expensive starter only to find out it's the incorrect one and most parts suppliers will not take electrical parts, including starters, back for refunds; no matter how clean they are.
