Rated 5 out of 5 by from Plenty of power and smooth operation Purchased the unit from Sears August 2013. Use for cemetery maintenance; works with hydrostatic drive for tight spots. Lots of power for the heavier grass.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Year round dependability. Have had this engine for 8 yrs, cuts grass in the summer, plows and tills in the fall and spring, and clears snow in the winter. Has never failed to start and perform in any weather. Can't be more impressed and satisfied with this product. Will always recommend a B&S engine.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Thought I was getting a great product to replace a craftsman with a Kohler engine This is the worst piece of equipment ever. I bought it to replace a Craftsman mower with a 17 HP Kohler that I have been using for 10 plus years. This engine is so inferior to the Kohler that I can't begin to compare them. I had to have the engine overhauled soon after the warrenty ran out. One the lobes on the camshaft was not getting oil, it wore out which caused the motor to lose power and miss. This caused one plug to fowl out and made this miss worse. I was mowing my lawn recently and found the throttle control wouldn't shut the engine down to and idle. I ran it that way and now yesterday while cutting my lawn the motor begin rving out of control. Even with the mower running I thought it was going to blowup. It burns oil excessivley, a pint or more every time I use it to cut my lawn. In comparison, the Kohler burns no oil and has twice the power of this overpriced unit. I hope i never have to purchase another mower with a briggs engine, I am so dissappointed in this product.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from 3yrs and 70 hours use and it looses a cylinder!! Lost a cylider after 70hours use.Bought a craftsman mower new in the summer of 2011. Currently has 70 hours use on the meter. While cutting it just started sounding funny, like a miss. No clanks or locking up like a normal major failure. It still runs. Ends up one cyl has no power at all. Spark is visible at the plug gap; valves are opening and closing fine. Haven't done a compression test but I think it is going to be a broken rings so it isnt getting compression... A lot of work to fix for an engine with just 70 hours on it! The lousy 2 yr warranty wont cover it, how about a warranty based on actual hours used.... Up until this issue I had no complaints, but this is a big one. Heck my cheap old M****y lasted 20 years of hard use; probably should have gone cheap again.
