Safety Use

Pump water out of a pool at the end of the season

Water Pump Safety Tips

When you need to transfer water for construction or maintenance projects, a water pump will do the job. Briggs and Stratton engines are used in gas-powered water-transfer pumps for home and industrial use.

Equipment Safety

  • Ensure the pressure safety-valve ring is properly operating.
  • Moisture can condense in a unit, so it is extremely important to drain the tank after each day's use. If left in the tank, moisture could cause rust and weaken the tank.
  • Energy-efficient motors can cut energy use by at least 12%.

The most energy-efficient motors are equipped with controllers and variable speed drives to help the motors match output with the energy necessary for the task.

Personal Safety

  • Always read the manufacturer's operator manual.
  • Carefully follow all safety and operation rules.
  • Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection when using a water pump.

Usage Tips

Storage Tips

  • Flush the pump case with clean fresh water, then completely drain. This keeps your unit clean and protects against freezing.
  • Cover the intake and discharge ports to prevent debris entering your unit during storage.

Priming Tips

Self-priming means a pump can create a partial vacuum by purging air from the intake hose and pump casing. All self-priming pumps require water to be added to the pump casing to start the priming process.

  • Place the pump as close to the water source as possible.
  • Fill the pump case with water.
  • NEVER operate a centrifugal pump without water in the pump casing.
  • Start the pump engine and partially restrict the discharge hose to improve priming time.
  • When you shut off a pump, water will flow out of the suction hose, requiring priming again.
