What does it look like?
This unwelcome dusty disease appears as grayish or white growth on upper surfaces of grass leaves. While all grasses are susceptible to powdery mildew, it is most apparent on Kentucky bluegrass.
When is a lawn susceptible?
Powdery mildew is most likely to occur in areas with low sunlight, high humidity, low air movement, and warm temperatures. Lawns that are shaded are predisposed to powdery mildew.
How can we get rid of it?
Powdery mildew seeks the shade, so pruning to eliminate shade may help. Using a grass that tolerates the shade such as Supina bluegrass or fine fescue can prevent its appearance outright. In very thin areas, a fungicide can help; but, it is really not worth the expense or trouble. A plant growth regulator, such as Primo, can be effective, but take care to apply it on a six-week basis.
