When do I need to apply lime to my lawn?

How do I know if I need to apply lime to my lawn? Is it ok to add fertilizer and lime at the same time?

Your lawn needs lime if the soil pH is below 5.5. Anything above 6.0 does not need lime. 5.5-6.0 is borderline and needs watching. You can determine the soil pH with a soil test. This can be a soil sample sent into a laboratory or there are kits available for you to do at home that will give you a rough idea.

Fertilizer and lime can be added to a lawn at the same time if the lawn is established. If you are establishing a lawn from seed, the lime should go down first and be watered in, then apply the starter fertilizer and seed.
