If you have a dog that is really pounding your backyard, you may have to go into "athletic field mode." By this we mean extra nutrients and water to make sure the grass can recover. Also, you may want to consider using crumb rubber as a protective mat in your grass. Crumb rubber is made from used tires. It comes in as small as sand and gravel (0.5-3.0 mm). You sprinkle, or topdress, this onto the heavy traffic area. The idea is that this rubber mat (0.5 inch thick) will effectively absorb the weight and wear of the traffic. The soil underneath will not become compacted as easily and the crown of the plant will be protected and be able to be regrown. It is a process patented from research at Michigan State University.
The rate is easy (0.5 inch layer or about 1 lb. rubber/1000 square ft); however, you need to have the grass in as good of shape as possible before you put the rubber down. Go through the establishment procedure and get the grass growing well before putting down the turf. The more you can hold back the dogs during this time, the better the establishment will turn out. While this product is from used tires, the EPA has not seen anything wrong with its use and ramifications if any soil issues are not present.
