Dogs cause dead spots on lawns due to the high level of nitrogen that’s released into the lawn through their urine. When properly applied as a fertilizer, nitrogen is actually a stimulant that encourages lawn growth. However, since most dogs urinate in one spot, the large concentration of nitrogen kills the grass.
To address the problem, water the area thoroughly after the dog urinates. Overseed dead spots or completely replace the affected area with new seed or sod.
As for adding tomato juice to your dog's food, you should always consult a veterinarian prior to making any dietary modifications. The PH of tomato sauce has little or no effect on the urine damage to the lawn. The addition of acidifying agents, including nutritional supplements like D-I Methionine Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) or tomato and fruit juices will provide no benefit for this problem and may, in fact, predispose the dog to an increased incidence of certain bladder stones.
