How do I get rid of weeds in my yard?

I have a grassy section in my yard that is more weeds than grass. I think I remember reading that one should use Round Up to completely get rid of everything, then start from scratch. Do you agree?

Lawn weeds are a symptom of poor maintenance practices. Most weeds can be prevented with a strong maintenance program that follows proper practices. To maintain a healthy lawn, follow the Yard Doctor's Prescription for a Healthy Lawn.

If you decide to use herbicides, follow package instructions. Since you are interested in learning more about Roundup Grass/Weed Killer, roundup kills Bermuda grass, annual bluegrass, barnyard grass, quack grass, and many other annual and perennial grasses. You can apply Roundup at any time weeds are actively growing.

It is important not to mow or cut off the tops of weeds before spraying. Growth of treated grasses will stop soon after the application. It will turn yellow and die within 1 to 4 weeks. Ornamentals plants and flowers may be planted and seeded 1 day after applying Roundup. Edible crops listed on the product label may be planted from transplant or seed after 3 days. If a crop is not listed on the label, wait 30 days before planting.
