What does it look like?
This summer broadleaf weed spreads rapidly to form dense mats on bare areas of ground. It gets its name from the dark red spots found in the middle of the leaves.
When, where, and how does it grow?
This weed is common in high-traffic areas and is a good indicator of compacted soil. Spotted spurge will even grow in the cracks of sidewalks if it has enough moisture. It thrives throughout the spring and summer and will die with the first frost. While it is seldom a problem for well-managed lawns, it is a prolific seed producer — so it can persist for a significant period.
How can we get rid of it?
Eliminating compact soil and ensuring proper mowing height will create a healthy lawn, resistant to this weed. Herbicides in the spring can prevent its initial growth, and are effective on young plants. Catch it early, as this plant is difficult to control with herbicides late in its life cycle.
