Pink snow mold (Microdochium nivale)What does it look like?

This mold grows in patches 3-8 inches wide and is ringed by a pinkish circle. It's a pretty color, but also a pretty annoying affliction for your lawn.

When is a lawn susceptible?

This mold loves cool temperatures and low light, which means it thrives under snow cover. Any lawn subject to prolonged snow cover is susceptible.

How can we get rid of it?

Fortunately, pink snow mold fades when the grass starts growing in the spring. You can help show it the door by breaking up the areas with a rake, getting more light and water to the lawn underneath. Outbreaks can be minimized by applying a balanced fertilizer in the fall and preventing use of too much late-season nitrogen. A fungicide applied to susceptible areas in the fall also can help prevent outbreaks.
