For exercise and stress relief, your yard offers plenty of possibilities.

The most obvious benefit of yard care - aside from achieving a beautiful yard - may be the exercise it provides. Whether you are walking behind your mower, pruning a hedge or planting a garden, you are not only improving your landscape but also burning calories.

According to the National Gardening Association, the following chart provides the number of calories burned by a 180 pound person doing the activity noted for 30 minutes. If you weigh less, you will burn fewer calories; if you weigh more, you will burn more calories.

Sitting quietly...40
Watering lawn or garden...61
Mowing with a riding mower...101
Trimming shrubs with a trimmer...142
Raking leaves...162
Bagging leaves...162
Planting seedlings...162
Mowing with a walk behind mower...182
Planting trees...182
Trimming shrubs manually...182

Digging, spading, tilling...202

Many yard care enthusiasts also appreciate the stress relief that working in the yard provides. After spending a day in the office, it's relaxing to be outside doing something totally different in the midst of nature.
