How to Choose the Best Landscape Trees and Plants for Your Yard

Brick HouseFall is a great time to update your landscaping. It's the perfect season for planting trees and bushes, and perennial plants are on sale. So go ahead - make some changes!

Choosing the right trees and landscape plants will make a huge difference in the appearance of your yard. Choose correctly, and you'll be amazed by the park-like beauty you can create in a yard of any size. Choose poorly, and you will be laboring to make corrections - or living with bad landscaping - for years to come.

Here are three things to remember when choosing landscape plants:

  1. Size matters. Select trees, bushes and other plants that will look good where you want to plant them not only now, but when they mature. Do some homework first. Don't make the mistake of planting a tiny row of bushes in front of your home that will overgrow the windows in two or three years.
  2. Going native. This will help ensure that the trees and plants are adapted to your weather and growing conditions. Your county agricultural extension office will have information on plants native to your area. Also, check out the Arbor Day Foundation website for trees that are suited for where you live.
  3. Putting down roots. Once you have selected your planting site, be sure to select plants that will accept their new living conditions. For example, flowering bushes such as lilacs and many flowers require full sunshine to thrive and bloom. For trees, be sure to take care in preparing the planting site, and don't plant the tree too deep. Check out How to Plant a Tree, for more information.
