House red brick nice lawnThe exterior of your home, including your front yard, creates a strong first impression. And if you neglect these areas, you can turn off visitors, prospective buyers - and your own enjoyment - no matter how nice the interior. But in this instance, you can change a first impression. In fact, you can change your curb appeal easily - and at practically no cost. Here are simple things you can do for instant, positive impact.

Pick it up. Make sure your landscape looks tended to:

  • Rake dead leaves from the lawn
  • Pick up fallen sticks and branches
  • Rake planting beds of all debris

Spruce it up. Keep up with maintenance to enhance your yard's assets:

  • Mow your lawn neatly
  • String trim around beds, trees, shrubs and pavement
  • Keep your lawn grass lush and green with an inch of water a week
  • Pull out any weeds you see or use an herbicide (make sure to read and follow package directions) for widespread growth
  • Reseed any bare spots in your lawn to keep it full
  • Trim shrubbery and tree limbs

Pretty it up. Add a few beautifying extras:

  • Plant groups of flowers in beds to add color
  • Place mulch around plants in beds
  • Hang a flowering plant or place a flower container near your entryway
  • Plant groundcover plants around trees for accent
  • Attract birds with a feeder
  • Install a few landscape lights to enhance your home at night

Make it shine. Clean is good. Gleaming is even better.

  • Pressure wash your siding
  • Pressure wash your driveway, entrance path and sidewalks
  • Clean your windows

Realistically, you can do these things in one weekend and with little money. And you'll come out like a bandit in the end: with a much better curb appeal - and a lot more pride.
