Create a Yard Scrapbook

Woman ScrapbookingMany of us create a scrapbook to record special family events. Why not do the same to remember your yard improvements?

A scrapbook or outdoor diary can be a lot of fun to create and look back on as the seasons change each year. It will also make a welcome family keepsake for future generations. It can be as simple as a lined notebook where you jot down notes and add an occasional photo. You can also create a detailed album, complete with artistic touches such as pressed leaves from your favorite Maple tree. Be sure to date all of your entries.

Here are some thoughts and tips of what you might want to include in your family yard album:

  • First home? Keep photos of your yard and home's exterior from all angles as a great "base line" to compare to in the future. Capture growing your first lawn, building a deck or planting trees on special occasions such as the birth of a child.
  • Photograph your home from the street to get a drive-by view of your yard. It will help you decide what to add or remove to give your home more curb appeal.
  • Create a home ideas section. Go through magazines and clip photos of great landscaping and beautiful yards and add them to your scrapbook for future reference.
  • Do before and after photos of a major yard project and the steps in between. It's a great way to record the fun as well as the work involved.
  • Photograph your kids helping you plant a tree. Each year you live in the home, take another photo of them next to the tree to see how both have grown.
  • Photograph your family working on and enjoying their yard. Include a photo of your first barbecue on your new patio or deck; the kids with their hands in the dirt growing their first vegetables - the ideas are endless.
  • Capture your yard in each season, taking photos from the same angles each season. You will be able to track the growth of trees and perennials and get ideas of how to highlight your yard in each season.

You'll be surprised at how much fun it is to create this outdoor history of your home, and how proud you'll be when you look back on your accomplishments.
